Every year, the City of Los Angeles opens its fire stations to the public in a spirited, citywide celebration known as Fire Service Day. This long-standing tradition brings residents and first responders together in the name of safety, education, and community pride.
Organized by the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), Fire Service Day is a one-time opportunity for Angelenos to meet their neighborhood firefighters, explore fire stations and apparatus, and learn firsthand about the vital, often lifesaving work the fire department performs every day. From emergency medical response to structure fire suppression, urban search and rescue, and wildfire mitigation, LAFD’s mission is vast, and Fire Service Day shines a spotlight on that critical service.
A Trusted Partner Since 2009
MySafe:LA, a longtime partner of the LAFD, has been an enthusiastic participant in Fire Service Day since 2009. Each year, the organization partners with LAFD personnel at select stations across the city to deliver hands-on public education that complements the department’s outreach efforts.
This year, MySafe:LA teams were active in both the San Fernando Valley and Central Los Angeles, bringing safety tools, life-saving training, and family-friendly resources to two vibrant communities.
Hands-On Safety in the San Fernando Valley and Central LA
At Fire Station 88 in Sherman Oaks, a key hub in the San Fernando Valley, MySafe:LA educators and EMTs engaged hundreds of visitors with hands-only CPR training, demonstrations on emergency preparedness, and a focused campaign on wildfire safety. With fire season approaching and record dry conditions persisting in many parts of the city, wildfire awareness was a top priority.
Attendees received free safety literature, wildfire evacuation planning guides, and checklists to help prepare their homes against ember intrusion and wind-driven flames. This was especially timely for residents in nearby hillsides and high fire hazard severity zones.
Simultaneously, in Central Los Angeles, at Fire Sation 94, MySafe:LA participated in Fire Service Day events at another bustling fire station, where they offered the same CPR training to both adults and youth, hosted prize giveaways, and scheduled appointments for free smoke alarm installations and home fire safety inspections—services designed to protect the most vulnerable members of the community.
Building a Culture of Preparedness
Fire Service Day isn’t just about fun and fanfare—it’s about building trust and encouraging everyday safety practices. For MySafe:LA, it’s an opportunity to reinforce lifesaving messages: install working smoke alarms, learn how to perform CPR, familiarize yourself with evacuation routes, and minimize fire risks in and around the home.
Through their strong partnership with LAFD, MySafe:LA continues to build a culture of preparedness throughout Los Angeles. These once-a-year events offer not only exposure to vital services but also a sense of connection—a reminder that public safety begins with an informed and engaged community.
