MYSAFE:LA AND THE LAFD’S GREAT SHAKEOUT DRILL

When MySafe:LA and the Los Angeles Fire Department get together, great things happen. Sometimes those great things are the Great ShakeOut.

The Great ShakeOut happens each year in October all over the world. Millions of people in areas that have experienced earthquakes, register online and at a specified time in the late morning, everyone Drops, Covers, and Holds On!

DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON!

Those are three magic words that will save your life during an earthquake. MySafe:LA teaches this technique to children every day in school. But on ShakeOut Day, we go a little bit further. Like we did at Rosemont Elementary School for ShakeOut 2013.

There are earthquake drills, and then there are the drills MySafe:LA and the Los Angeles Fire Department create together. For the Great ShakeOut, MySafe:LA sets up a drill at an elementary school in Los Angeles. We bring in special effects make up artists who “moulage” kids and teachers with “injuries.” We bring in L.A. Children’s Hospital experts, the American Red Cross, State disaster experts and earthquake scientists. And then we call in the LAFD in full disaster mode. This is a chance for first responders to work with kids, a rare opportunity that is imperative in their training. And it’s a chance for kids to see first responders in full-on professional mode. The event has proven invaluable every year we’ve done it.

MYSAFE:LA WILL HELP YOU DRILL

We’re good at this. We create drills for many different organizations, from businesses to home owners’ associations to hospitals. We’ll train your staff or neighbors, create the disaster scenario you’re interested in training around, and bring in your first-in fire company. It’s a win win for you, your community, and the professional first responders who serve you.

If you’re interested in creating a drill, email us at support@mysafela.org.
