Wow! Halloween is getting to be as exciting as that other big holiday kids love (hint: Santa Claus!). But, these days, it's important to be safe as well as stuffed (with candy). Every year, kids get injured or in some kind of trouble because they didn't think ahead. Most of you know the basics, but it's important to practice and plan in advance. When you see a firefighter on his or her way to an emergency, you should know they're ready because they planned ahead. You can too - it's fun, easy, and won't take but a few minutes. So here are some important tips that may be useful when heading out for a trick or treat adventure...
- Don't ever go into a stranger's home (or apartment) or even ring their door for treats unless you have your parents or other adults with you. They should be along for the fun (and you could even ask them to dress up). If someone seems scary, it's okay to run away (back to your parents).
- Don't run into the street. In fact, be careful of all streets, even when there is a crosswalk. Look for vehicles in both directions and if you have your little sister or brother with you, take them by the hand and cross with them. If there is a stop sign, make certain you stop before crossing. If there is a light, wait until the light changes from RED to GREEN before you cross. Even if it's a very quiet street, make sure you double check. Today, there are electric cars and they barely make a sound.
- Always tell your parents whom you're traveling with. It may sound strange, but your parents share that information with each other, too (at least they should!). If something happens that is bad, it's very important that your parents know how to get help to you right away. Sometimes, it seems like parents are trying to steal your fun, but in reality, you're a part of the family and they love you. When you have kids, you'll do the same thing!
- If you can drive and are taking a bunch of friends to a party, make sure that you have enough gas to get there. You don't want to run out on a dark street, all alone, just like in the film, Rocky Horror Picture Show!
- If you parents give you a curfew, return home at the appointed hour. It builds trust between you and them and they are doing it for your safety. If you are going to be late, call them and let them know.
- Vandalism is something you don't think about, but it's out there. Throwing eggs at cars and houses is not cool - it's vandalism! If you get caught, you'll be grounded for certain - and you might even have to clean everything up - and that isn't cool, either! You can also be arrested (think handcuffs and the back seat of a police car with all of your friends watching!). It isn't fun, even if you don't get caught while doing it. There are lots of fun things to do on Halloween.
- Please be good to animals on Halloween (and every day of the year). They love you and all people, so make certain you love them back. A fun costume might be good for your kitty or doggie. IMPORTANT: Don't give your pets candy. It could kill them. Dogs, for example, are typically allergic to chocolate. Have some doggie or kitty treats handy if you want your pet to join in the festivities.
