We dreamed up MySafe:LA on the apparatus floor of a fire station in Los Angeles, chatting with members of the LAFD. Firefighters have been at the core of what we do from our earliest days.
Whether first-in fire companies join us at school programs, or offer further expertise at presentations to older adults, firefighters are teaching safety alongside us. IN FACT much of the power and effectiveness of our in-school, and in-person safety presentations come from the formal involvement of LAFD members.
If you or your station already visit schools, you should give us a call! We have materials and a proven, vetted program that may benefit your educational mission. We take all of the logistics and administrative work off your hands. We want you, as sworn firefighters, to concentrate on your expertise when delivering fire and life safety messages.
If you’re an officer, we have a team ready to assist you with community outreach. Our instructors visit community and homeowners’ groups throughout the City of Los Angeles, and as such, we can help facilitate presentations, discussions, and fire safety demonstrations. We even have PowerPoint presentations ready and waiting!
Check out our resource center. It’s free and so are all the educational materials.
In our in-person presentations, we always teach with multimedia tools, and invite you to use our vast collection of award-winning educational films. You can see most of them throughout this website. But if you would like to download specific films, visit our Vimeo Channel. We set it up so all videos are available for download or live streaming.
All of our instructors carry specific first responder training, whether they’re EMTs, Incident Command specialists, or CERT Level III volunteers. In order to complete our credentials, we need to “ride out” with fire companies.
This relationship with our flagship department is important to us. We want to know how best to interact with you and how best to teach kids and their families how to be safe. If you’d like to help us continue to train, contact our Training Officer, Retired LAFD Captain Steve Owens at steve dot owens @ mysafela dot org. We’d love to join you for a shift. We’ll even bring the ice cream!
We have several active and retired LAFD members on our Board of Directors, and scores of active members who volunteer a few hours a month with us. But we could always use more. Are you interested in teaching the children of Los Angeles how to lead safer lives, or help our most at risk communities safety check their homes? We could use your help. If you have a few hours a week or month to spare, contact us at volunteer @ mysafela dot org
