Welcome to the online education center for MySafe:LA. We offer two types of online education courses on fire and life safety education: 1. Courses for children, families and seniors to help you cope with disaster preparedness, personal wellness, and fire prevention will be available to anyone.2. Specific courses for educators to share with their classrooms, related to the same topics. Courses will be released during the course of the coming year. In the event of a disaster that strikes your home, you need to know how to get out safely. Whether threatened by fire, earthquake, flood or any other emergency, you can learn how to get ready and protect yourself and your family (including your pets!). You'll learn what to do when the time comes to escape, how to prepare your belongings if you have advanced warning, and how to create a comprehensive checklist that makes you ready and able to react in an emergency situation.

Everyone knows that a fire extinguisher can be used to put out fires, but did you know there are different kinds of fire extinguishers because there are different kinds of fires? This lesson will help you identify different kinds of fires, what extinguishers to use on those fires, what retardants go into a fire extinguisher, and most importantly, how to use each one. Fire burns, but so can dozens of other things in your home like electricity, steam, hot water and extreme cold. Protect yourself and your family by learning the dos and don’ts of using your stove, electronics, and other potential sources of burns. This course will also teach you to identify different types of burns and how to treat them before emergency medical help arrives.

In Southern California, thousands of people live in the "hot" zone, also known as the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). These people are at risk every year fire season comes around. This lesson will teach you about wildfires, how they start, what they can do, and how to prepare for them. We'll cover preparations for your home, what to pack if you're ordered to evacuate, and when to safely leave your home before an advancing wildfire.

Southern California is earthquake country and scientists have predicted a large earthquake is likely to strike out region in the next 30 years. The San Andreas Fault that runs the length of our state, is particularly overdue for a big earthquake. You can learn to prepare yourself with this lesson, which will teach you what you need to have in your home, what to keep by your bed at all times, and what exactly to do when the earth starts shaking.

An earthquake can hit at any time. And if the earthquake is a large and devastating one, like earth scientist are predicting for our region, first responders will be overwhelmed. That means you'll need to take care of yourself and your family for at least 72 hours after an earthquake. Do you know what it takes to survive? In this lesson, you will learn about what happens after the earth stops moving, and what you can do to survive and recover from disaster.

AED stands for automated external defibrillator, a life-saving tool that has been made available in many public places, and can be used on patients suffering from sudden cardiac problems. AEDs quickly analyze patients' heart rhythms, determine whether an external shock to the heart will help, and then administer that shock. This lesson will teach you about AEDs, how to locate them, and how most common models work.
