Learning about Fire and Life Safety
The central themes of MySafe:LA are community and education. It's easy to talk about safety during an emergency. Ask any firefighter and they'll tell you - a real emergency is unlike anything you can imagine.
Only through education and practice will you have a realistic chance of being ready to manage emergencies. That's why we've developed the MySafe:LA fire and life safety program for public and private schools. It's a valuable addition to any classroom, and we invite you to spend a few minutes learning how valuable this program can be.
SCHOOL VISITS:
We visit local public and private schools. Each visit includes a combination of MySafe:LA instructors and Los Angeles Firefighters. We're in and out in one hour, but the memories will last a lifetime. Each teacher receives a wealth of teaching materials, plus access for his or her class in the MySafe:LA Online Education Center.
Our education specialists will return to your school three and six months later, and evaluate the retention level of your students. To-date, we're thrilled to announce that the average retention for students that have been through the program is 85%. How's that for quality test scores?
There is no classroom program like this. Your students will remember what they've learned and talk about our presentation for weeks and months after we leave. And, in addition to our presentation, the MySafe:LA team will provide you with a DVD filled with safety projects, a quiz for the kids to give their parents, posters, and much more.

WE KNOW YOUR TIME IS LIMITED - SO WE DO ALL THE WORK!
The current economy and challenges in the State of California mean more work and less time for teachers. We know your calendar is filled. We also know how important it is to share critical fire and life safety education with you, your peers, and your students. That's why we plan the programs to allow you to do as little or as much as you'd like. Our visits are completely free - and there's nothing for you to do but show up!
If you'd like to get your students involved in ongoing programs, we can help with that, too. We offer a combination of disc-based and online education courses. You can share information in your classroom, or log on and deliver education via the web.
ONLINE COURSES:
For teachers, MySafe:LA will allow you to become a part of our learning environment. We'll help you register as a teacher, and once your registration is complete, you will have the ability to enroll your entire class. Take them through a series of courses and provide them with assignments, discussion topics, quiz materials, group projects, and even a final exam. All results are tracked and managed within the learning database.
Initial courses include
- Family Escape Plans
- Understanding Fire Extinguisher Use
- The Proper Use of Fire Extinguishers
- Burn Prevention
- Wildfire Safety

EDUCATION TOURS
Kids love fire engines. The rich history of the Los Angeles Fire Department is celebrated, memorialized, and displayed at the LAFD Museum and Memorial in Hollywood, California. Every month, we arrange for special tours, just for kids. Learn about the great fires, why firefighters do the amazing things they do, and much, much more. You can also visit the wonderful exhibits and be a part of the William Rolland Firefighter's Educational Institute. If you are interested in having your school visit the LAFD Museum & Memorial, please contact us. Even if you don't have budget for bussing, we want to hear from you. We'll collaborate with your local council district to seek funding for transportation, if required.
You can learn more by visiting the LAFD museum website.
