For Teachers

From the Children's Burn Foundation:

This is the first burn prevention curriculum to meet Health and Science state requirements. Developed by the Children's Burn Foundation, the program provides teachers with the means to educate children effectively on burn prevention. Developed by educators with support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), “Safety Smart” brings critical fire and burn prevention messages to children and their families. “Safety Smart” instructs students on responsible behaviors and attitudes towards burn prevention.

The program is geared for youngsters in grades kindergarten through third grade and includes entertaining posters, games and tests to reinforce learning. Letters and homework assignments that include parental involvement are provided in English and Spanish to ensure that information reaches parents at home.

Childhood burns can leave long-term emotional, psychological and physical scars. “Safety Smart” brings information into the classroom to prevent these needless tragedies. The curriculum is available at no charge to California schools.

What Does a Search Dog do? In addition to the various land, sea, and air resources that are available, California Task Force One (CA-TF-1), managed for FEMA by the Los Angeles Fire Department, has several search dogs on its roster. Most of the k9s are owned by their handlers (not the department), and these individuals dedicate themselves to saving the lives of people trapped or buried during a disaster.  They pay for all of their food, transport, and training out of their own pockets, so it is truly a labor of love. Let's see what these dogs do, and learn how they can help save YOU in the event of an earthquake or other disaster. Click Here.
