For Teachers

From the Children's Burn Foundation:

This is the first burn prevention curriculum to meet Health and Science state requirements. Developed by the Children's Burn Foundation, the program provides teachers with the means to educate children effectively on burn prevention. Developed by educators with support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), “Safety Smart” brings critical fire and burn prevention messages to children and their families. “Safety Smart” instructs students on responsible behaviors and attitudes towards burn prevention.

The program is geared for youngsters in grades kindergarten through third grade and includes entertaining posters, games and tests to reinforce learning. Letters and homework assignments that include parental involvement are provided in English and Spanish to ensure that information reaches parents at home.

Childhood burns can leave long-term emotional, psychological and physical scars. “Safety Smart” brings information into the classroom to prevent these needless tragedies. The curriculum is available at no charge to California schools.

Newsflash

Get Ready, Get Set, GO! - Several dangerous fires are burning in the greater Los Angeles area and several thousand homes are potentially in harm's way. A wildfire is unlike any other type of fire. It's not contained in a building. It's subject to the wind, the fuel load, and the topology of the area in which it is burning. As a wildfire grows, it can create its own "climate" and change direction, speed, and ferocity. Don't get surprised and worse, trapped. When authorities say, "evacuate," do it.
